How might we reimagine technology not as a tool of extraction, but as a medium for attuning with ourselves, the planet, and to breath itself? What if, instead of accelerating disconnection, our technological systems became rituals of reconnection?
For Rhizome World 2025, West of Here presents Survival Strategies: The Dao of Planetary Breath, a salon that brings together 3D world building artists Wendi Yan and Banyi Huang, baguazhang 八卦掌 master Yunuen Rhi, and curator Zandie Brockett for a conversation and movement workshop exploring how Eastern philosophies, particularly Daoist alchemy and internal martial arts, open ancestral portals into new mind-body relationships, and offer speculative strategies for navigating a technologized world.
At the heart of this gathering is Wendi Yan’s Inner Carbon Classic, a 3D video game that reimagines Daoist breathwork as a planetary rite of passage. Set in a speculative cosmos, players merge climate biotechnology with somatic spirituality, embodying a Daoist breath tasked with restoring Earth's carbon cycles. As players tune their breath to planetary rhythms, the work proposes an ethic of oneness, where technology becomes a vehicle for planetary care rather than domination.
Following the conversation, participants will engage in an Isuini movement practice led by Yunuen Rhi, combining Native medicine pathways and internal Chinese martial arts to awaken the body’s innate self-healing wisdom.
